The subject of whether or not to take days off when losing weight is one that is quite controversial. You can make up your own mind about this topic but the following is just my opinion. When we talk about ‘days off’ we are referring of course to those days when you abandon your weight loss attempt and just pig out and laze about.

The following are some of the reasons why I don’t actually agree with these days.

I feel that diet fads will never give you long term results and that is why I don’t actually believe in them. If you really want your weight loss to be a permanent thing then you will have to make lifestyle changes that you can permanently adopt. That will mean that there will be no need to take days off because these changes will become part of our daily life. When you go on a fad diet, you will be depriving yourself and by giving yourself a ‘day off’ you will be allowing yourself to have the thing that you are craving. This is reinforcing the idea in our minds that losing weight is about self-punishment something that can’t last. But changing your lifestyle is a preferable idea because it is not about being punished but rather adopting changes which are better for you.

However that is not to say that rewarding ourselves for losing weight is something that we shouldn’t do because I certainly believe that we should. But in my opinion a reward should not be something that we have been trying to stop doing, ie it is not a good idea to reward yourself for not eating chocolate by having a chocolate bar. An alcoholic doesn’t reward himself with beer after they escape addiction and we shouldn’t do the same with our bad habits.

Instead you could take a trip out to the shops and buy yourself some new clothes to suit your new body – this would not be bad for your health and will still make you feel better.
